At Pullinger School of Motoring, your progress is tracked transparently using the DVSA's official "Learning to Drive" framework across 27 core skills divided into 8 essential groups.
Phase 1: Car Familiarisation & Vehicle Control (Skills 1–7)
- Cockpit Drill & Safety ChecksMaster legal responsibilities and the essential "Show Me, Tell Me" questions.
- Moving Off & StoppingLearn precise clutch control to master moving away smoothly and eliminating the fear of stalling.
- Road PositioningDevelop accurate lane discipline on quieter local roads.
Phase 2: Hazard Perception & Junctions (Skills 8–16)
- Mirrors & SignallingBuild the mandatory habit of "Mirrors, Signal, Manoeuvre".
- Junctions & One-Way SystemsPractice navigating complex junctions, crossroads, and pedestrian crossings confidently.
- Roundabout MasteryLearn to tackle local hotspots like the Ventura Park roundabouts or the A5192 Eastern Avenue.
Phase 3: Core Manoeuvres & Safe Reversing (Skills 17–20)
- Parking TechniquesMaster forward/reverse bay parking and parallel roadside parking.
- Roadside ControlsPerfect pulling up on the right, reversing safely, and executing a controlled emergency stop.
Phase 4: Advanced Road Types & Independent Driving (Skills 21–27)
- High-Speed RoadsLearn to safely join, drive on, and exit busy dual carriageways like the A5 and A38.
- Independent DrivingGain confidence following satellite navigation or traffic signs independently for the test.
- Skills For LifeWe look beyond the test sheet, covering night driving, adverse weather, and managing distractions.
